DOMESTIC MEDICAL ESCORT

Domestic Commercial Medical Escort (CME) is the use of various modes of commercially available public transportation such as domestic airlines, Amtrak trains or chartered motor vehicles for the purpose of patient transport accompanied by a medical attendant for destinations within the United States. Most commonly this involves a stable patient with an injury or illness unlikely to deteriorate during transport, accompanied by a nurse or paramedic flying first or business class on a major US airline. As described in the quick reference guide, the suitable patient should have some degree of mobility and be able to sit upright for an extended period of time. All arrangements of the transport from sending to receiving facility or the patient’s home are made by our flight coordinators.

INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL MEDICAL ESCORT (CME)

International Commercial Medical Escort(CME) is similar to domestic CME but utilizes any international airline for trips either originating in the United States with a destination of another country outside the US or trips originating outside the US and the destination is either back to the US or to another country. Just as with a domestic CME the patient flies, accompanied by one of our aeromedical specialists, in first or business class, however, this option, utilizing a non-US airline, has the added option of a patient stretcher located in the back of the coach section of the aircraft. This may be more suitable for patient’s unable to sit up for an extended period of time, those requiring more intensive medical attention and is significantly less expensive than an air ambulance. It is, however, not intended nor suitable for a patient with an acute medical condition nor one that has a real likelihood of medical deterioration.
